One Love Story by Lesley Chan
A young girl named Petal
kept a flower seed
tucked under her pillow;
it had been there for
as long as she could remember,
but she could not recall from where it came.
Petal longed to plant the seed
in the little meadow
right outside her bedroom window,
but wire and posts enclosed it,
and her mother refused to
let her step beyond the fence:
“Where flowers are in bloom, there are bees.”
Winter came, and one morning,
Petal decided to leave the seed on a post—
a small gift for the meadowlark
to delight in in between his blissful tunes.
But a young boy named Wind,
trying to climb over the fence,
caught sight of the seed before the bird.
He placed it in the palm of his hand, kissed it,
and blew it into the meadow.
Each morning, Petal, peering out her window,
would see Wind climb his little ladder,
sit on a post and stretch his neck
high above the meadow.
What was the strange boy looking for?
Wind, wrapped in wool,
continued to perch himself up each day,
mystified by the cotton wonderland under his nose.
The days slowly grew warmer and warmer
until one day Wind leapt off the post
with such urgency Petal couldn’t help but
rush out the door and up the ladder;
without a care, she let the post
catch a piece of her
chalky, cotton eyelet frock.
When she reached Wind
in the middle of the little meadow,
he was admiring a single, white petaled bellflower
smiling back at him
in a sea of lavender ones.
“She finally sounded my name,” he said.
He had found her.
In that moment, Petal knew
the flower had blossomed
from the beloved seed
she had kept for so many years
under her pillow.
